Many Americans are seeking relief from skyrocketing fuel prices. One solution is gaining recognition above expensive electric Hybrid and distant fuel cell options. Diesel engines, easily converted to run on vegetable based fuels, are an affordable and accessible remedy to our dependence on increasingly expensive and polluting fossil fuels.

The talk, entitled “Veggie Powered Vehicles: an Affordable Environmental Alternative” will be given by Alicia Leinberger and Mike Clark. Together they have years of experience powering vehicles on Straight Vegetable Oil (SVO). Topics will cover: diesel engine technology; SVO conversions and systems; SVO sources; purchasing a diesel vehicle; politics of SVO; and resources for further information. SVO powered cars will be on display.

Invented in 1893 by Rudolf Diesel, the high efficiency engine that bears his name was originally engineered to run on vegetable oil. Diesel’s aim was to boost agricultural markets with a fuel derived from crops rather than petroleum. “More than a century later,” according to Alicia Leinberger who has logged more than 25 thousand miles on vegetable oil, “SVO as a fuel source brings us back around to Diesel’s initial intent.”

Thousands of vegetable oil powered diesel vehicles are now on the road in the US. A simple conversion can be done on any diesel vehicle. Used cooking oil from restaurants is a local and readily available fuel source. An added benefit to burning vegetable oil is significantly lower toxic tailpipe emissions.
