Tech school student first woman to climb wind tower

CLEVELAND, WISCONSIN — Velvet Sommers doesn’t see any barriers preventing a woman from succeeding in a man’s field.
On Wednesday, she became the first student to climb the 110-foot wind turbine on the campus of Lakeshore Technical College. The occasion wasn’t meant to break gender lines, but to provide the 20-year-old Manitowoc resident with an opportunity to apply what she learned in the classroom to a real-life situation. The tower was due for its second maintenance check of the year.
