City of Madison Hearing on MG&E Blount St. Plant
From Bruce Nilles of the Sierra Club:
Greetings, fellow clean energy supporters! We have a chance to fix the dirty coal plant in our back yard.
Great news! The City of Madison wants to hear what YOU think about MG&E’s dirty coal-fired power plant in the heart of Madison! Please join us at a hearing sponsored by Madison’s Commission on the Environment to learn more and tell the City that it is time for MG&E to clean up its act!
Monday, December 12, 6:00 pm.
City/County Building
215 Martin Luther King Blvd.
Room 201
Madison’s Commission on the Environment, a city committee made up of scientific experts and community members, are holding a hearing to provide information and get public input about air pollution from MG&Es downtown, coal-fired Blount Street Plant. There will be a panel presentation by representatives from MG&E, Sierra Club, the Department of Natural Resources and the Department of Health and Family Services. Following the presentations, the public have the opportunity to ask questions and voice their concerns.
This is our chance to get involved and cut Madison’s air pollution. Most importantly, this is a chance to spread the word and bring friends, family, and neighbors to the hearing to raise their voices. Together, we need to phone bank, distribute literature in the neighborhood, get our hair tested for mercury, post flyers, and much more. Read on or just contact Sierra Club at 257-4994 to sign up.
Together, we can fill the city hearing room with concerned citizens who care about the way their energy needs are met. You can do your own outreach, using or modifying the materials that I have attached and distributing them to your schools, community groups, neighbors, and anyone else you think might be interested.
You can also sign up to join others to call your neighbors and distribute literature.

Mercury Hair Testing
Wednesday, December 7, 12:00 at Cha-Cha Salon, 121 E. Mifflin
Have you ever wondered how much mercury is in your body?
The Sierra Club is co-sponsoring a mercury study with Greenpeace and the University of North Carolina. The free test involves snipping a small sample of hair that we will send to the Environmental Quality Institute at the University of North Carolina-Asheville, which will process the results. The data will be added anonymously to a UNC research study on the effects of mercury in the U.S. population. Please let us know if you want to attend so that we can have enough test kits.
Please call with questions and the times that you can get involved.
Thanks for your help making this event a success!
