Gas from garbage used for energy

DELAVAN-Not everything at the Mallard Ridge Landfill stays underground.

Some of it goes out to the power grid.

As garbage rots, it produces landfill gas. The gas, 55 percent methane and 45 percent carbon dioxide, burns cleanly, said Mike Williams, general manager at Mallard Ridge, one of 32 landfills in Wisconsin licensed to take nonhazardous solid waste.
