Study: Simple changes, big savings, for Dells schools

From a story by Anna Krejci in Wisconsin Dells Events:

An engineer from an Illinois company that helps its clients make energy-saving improvements to buildings made several recommendations to the Wisconsin Dells School District Buildings and Grounds Committee at a meeting Tuesday.

Michael Johnson, performance engineer for Energy Systems Group, told the committee that the district’s high school might benefit from occupancy sensors to trigger lighting, day light sensors and occupancy sensors for the heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems for classrooms and offices. He recommended changing outside lights from 100-watt incandescent lamps to compact fluorescent lamps. The company says the new lighting would save more than 60 percent of the electric energy being used now. He recommended putting in variable frequency drives on secondary dual temperature pumps and air handling units serving the gym and cafeteria. Johnson also suggested reconditioning the HVAC system, upgrading the phone system, installing a security card access system and replacing the windows in the shops at the high school.
