Doyle announces record state clean energy purchase

SUN PRAIRIE – Governor Jim Doyle announced today that the State of Wisconsin has purchased over 92,400 megawatt hours (MWh) of renewable electrical energy, one of the largest government purchases of renewable energy in the nation. . . .
In 2006, Governor Doyle signed the Energy Efficiency and Renewables Act into law (2005 Wis Act 141), which requires key state agencies and university campuses to purchase 20 percent of their energy from renewable sources by the end of 2011. The 92,400 MWh annual purchase makes great progress toward these goals.
The state is purchasing electricity from renewable sources equal to 10 percent of the energy consumed by the Department of Health and Family Services, Department of Corrections, Department of Veterans Affairs, Department of Administration, Department of Public Instruction and the University of Wisconsin System.
The renewable electricity will be purchased from Madison Gas and Electric, We Energies and Wisconsin Public Power Inc. The amount purchased is enough electricity to light 9,240 Wisconsin homes each year, and the majority of the renewable energy will come from wind, solar, hydro and landfill gas sources here in Wisconsin.
